Kanchipuram (On the way to Thiruvannamalai)

Kanchipuram is a Tamil word formed by combining two words “Kanchi” and “Puram” meaning “Brahma” and “residential place” respectively and located on the banks of the Vegavathy and Palar Rivers. The earliest references to Kanchipuram are found in the books of the Sanskrit by Patanjali, who lived between the 3rd BCE.

Day 3-5 Thiruvannamalai

Thiruvannamalai is a popular pilgrimage town, located on the foothills of Annamalai hills. The temple, inhabited by ancient and modern sages for thousands of years, is one of the Pancha Bhuta places (five ancient shrines built for sadhana around each of the five elements – fire, earth, water, air, and space). The Arunachaleshwara temple was built for the element of fire.

The Divine Arunachala hill leads to the Maharishi Ramana Ashram and Virupakshi Malai caves. It is in these caves that Ramana Maharshi spent over a decade in meditation and came to be known as Bhagwan Ramana Maharshi. Ramana Maharshi (30 December 1879 – 14 April 1950) was an Indian sage and jivanmukta (liberated being).

Day 6-7 Thanjavur

The Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur is the pinnacle of Chola architecture. The most famous feature of this temple is the immense 66-meter-tall shikhara or central tower. The tower is capped by a single stone weighing almost 100 tons. Thanjavur is also famous for its cultural heritage.

Day 8-10 Madurai

Madurai is located on the banks of the river Vaigai, Madurai has been a major settlement for two millennia and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. This city was the capital of the Pandyan kingdom – initially at Korkai, around 600 BCE, and later moved to Koodal (the present Madurai) during the reign of Nedunj Cheliyan I.

Madurai is famous for its temples built by Pandyan and Madurai Nayak kings in the Dravidian style of architecture. It is also one of India’s most outstanding Hindu pilgrimage centers. Madurai is also called the City of Junctions (Koodal Nagaram), City of Jasmine (Malligai Maanagar), Temple City (Koil Maanagar), City That Never Sleeps (Thoonga Nagaram), and City of Four Junctions (Naanmada koodal).

And the last day in Auroville (Pondicherry) Beach

Auroville is a small town 6 km north of Pondicherry. This town was a vision of The Mother from Sri Aurobindo Ashram at Pondicherry as it is an international town. The city was designed by architect Roger Anger. The township of Auroville is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics, and all nationalities. Auroville was founded as a project of Sri Aurobindo in 1968 by his disciple Mirra Alfassa, popularly called “The Mother”. About 2,000 people from 50 countries live in this planned village.
